"Sorry" Just Doesn't Cut It, Missy

A couple days ago we were out a farm and
Cora lay down in the dirt as we were walking to the car to go home.
“Cora, don’t lie down again, please, we need to keep
moving,” I said. “Sorry, Mommy,” Cora said, and
got up, walking a few steps.

And then lying down again.

“Cora, I told you not to lie down again!” I said.
“Sorry,” she said, and stood up.

“So am I, honey, because you just lost your video from
disobeying,” I replied.

Cora burst into tears. “But I said I was sorry!”

Cora’s hit that stage where she
thinks “sorry” covers a multitude of sins and wipes the
slate clean. And when she says it, she truly means it.

And then does it again.

She does it quite regularly, often at least once a day. And then
she’s genuinely surprised when she loses something or has a
consequence because of it. She bursts into tears, quite worried and
upset about what she lost, feeling like the forgiveness just
isn’t enough if she doesn’t get back all her
privileges.

I know we’ve talked about Jesus’ forgiveness washing
away our sins and giving us a new beginning, but somehow
she’s missed part of the lesson.
