Moving Forward, Reluctantly

I can’t believe Madeleine’s four months old.  Time is flying so fast and she’s not sitting still for me.  We have to start thinking about solid foods already!  I thought I’d be throwing a party in celebration of moving to solid foods, but I’m already sad that soon I won’t be all that she needs to keep growing big and strong.  It’s her first step in moving away from me, becoming truly independent.  It sucks.

So I’ve bought the rice cereal and have it in the cupboard for the appropriate time.  Our pediatrician thinks Madeleine will be “asking” for it sooner rather than later, and has given us signs to watch out for.  I’m going back to my three favorite reference books – Baby 411, The Baby Book, and Touchpoints to read up on the transition and allergies and so on.  I want to be ready and I want to help her move forward.  But does she have to move so fast?  I came home from teaching last night and when I walked in the room, Brian was holding her and dancing to Derek Webb.  She had fallen asleep, her head resting against his shoulder, her thumb halfway out of her mouth.  Sometimes my heart breaks with happiness.  How can it possibly get better?
