Mommy Amnesia

I have a distinct memory of standing over my screaming daughter lying on her changing table at, say, 5 weeks old, and vowing to myself that I'd NEVER forget how hard it was.  I couldn’t imagine a time when I’d look back with a dreamy smile on my face and say, “Her first three months?  She was pretty great – very calm and easy, really.”

So imagine my shock when I read Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner, a novel about three women and their lives from prenatal yoga class through the first six months or so of motherhood.  This author brought me back so vividly to Madeleine’s first few weeks, and it was only a couple of months ago!  I can’t believe how the edge has worn off already.  The book’s really beautiful, and I highly recommend it with one caveat:  there’s tragedy in the story, so stay away from it if you’re post-partum.  Beyond that, you’ll feel as if you’re talking to a girlfriend who’s been there.  A great novel about friendship and motherhood and trying to do it all.
