Cora And Corduroy

We’ve got a few Corduroy books in
our house – the original plus Corduroy Finds a Pocket, and
Corduroy Lost and Found. The girls both love them all and we will
periodically dig them back out and put them in high rotation, as
has happened recently. Cora, especially, is fond of them right now
and has been talking about Corduroy and what she’d do if she
could play with him.

Which is why my mom went into her room yesterday morning and came
out with a stuffed bear of her own (long story) wearing red
corduroy overalls. “This is my Corduroy, Cora, do you want to
play with him?”

Um, is Elmo red?

Cora grabbed him and was off for the day.
Corduroy went everywhere she went – Sam’s Club, the
library, lunch, and playing outdoors. Corduroy took quiet (I use
the word loosely) time with Cora, and sat with her during dinner.
Corduroy and Cora – picture their names in a heart with a
plus sign between them.

“And Cora and Corduroy went racing up the stairs,” Cora
said as she ran up to her room, mimicking Corduroy Lost and Found.
“’An elevator! I’ve always wanted to ride in an
elevator!’ he said,” Cora murmured as we rode down at
the library (same book). “I’ve always wanted a bed just
my size,” she whispered from the first book as she tenderly
rocked him in her cradle.

Corduroy watched solemnly as Cora explained how to eat a yogurt
stick. He listened attentively as I read him his first Thomas the
Tank Engine book. Corduroy was unflaggingly polite and unfailingly
interested in everything about Cora’s day. And as I watched
my baby girl, little braids sticking out of her head as she cuddled
him protectively in the frozen foods aisle, I was a bit enchanted
myself.

Will it last? Dunno. But right now, it’s adorable.
