The Gift That Keeps On Giving

A couple weeks ago the whole family came
down with a moderate cold. A few rough days later, Daddy and Maddie
were fine, while Mommy, whose body is busy multitasking, was taking
a bit longer to recover. I’ve had a hard time shaking off
that last bit of stuffiness, fatigue, and sluggishness. In fact,
about a week and a half ago, I noticed I was feeling a bit
nauseated as well. Then I noticed that it was only for a couple
hours each morning.

Yes, that friend of every pregnant gal’s, morning sickness,
was back.

My first thought, as you can imagine was,
“Are you freakin’ KIDDING me??? Can you say third
trimester? CAN YOU SAY THIRTY –TWO WEEKS?????”

Now, I know that some unfortunate women (you have my deepest
sympathies) have morning sickness the entire pregnancy. I, however,
am not one of those people. In fact, I am almost embarrassed to lay
claim to suffering through morning sickness, since I only had it
for a few weeks, I never approached throwing up or gagging, and was
never really incapacitated with it. My first pregnancy was even
lighter, with only a week of a mild food aversion.

Even now, it’s comparatively light. I only experience it for
a couple hours in the morning, and simply feel a mild queasiness
that whispers, “Wouldn’t you be more comfortable back
in bed?” But still, it’s a royal pain in the hiney,
especially since Maddie’s at her rowdiest in the morning.

As soon as I figured out what it was, I grimly went back to my
anti-morning sickness routine: drinking a ton of water (thank God
for Hint
Water
’s peppermint flavor, which helps the nausea)
and snacking my way through the morning and evening. I have a
bottle of Ensure by my bedside for middle-of-the-night wakings, and
I find that guzzling it fills me up enough that I’m not quite
so queasy-from-hunger in the morning. I know what to do, and have
gotten it pretty much under control. I mentioned it to my OB when I
saw her this week, worried the hormone surge might indicate
something bad, and she said not to worry.

So I’m not worried. Just peeved. Watch out for the crabby,
queasy, heavily pregnant woman on the subway.
