Happy Feet

No, this isn’t a review of that
penguin movie.

My daughter, who has not seen that movie, has Happy Feet of her
own. She and her daddy, who spent a lot of time together last
weekend while Mommy started working on family taxes, came up with a
new game – Happy Feet.

It’s pretty easy, actually; you just
say, “Happy Feet!” and watch the feet start dancing
like crazy. Maddie loves it when you join in, and will often order
that you do so, but she also loves kicking up her heels by herself
and will keep going long after she’s out of breath.

Of course, being my child, she’s not content to leave the
game to such simplicity. Now there’s the Happy Feet Blanket
– one of her many little blankets – which has to be
spread out on the floor as a sort of stage. “Happy
Feet!” she’ll announce, then go to get the blanket and
drag it to the clearing of her choosing. Sometimes she’ll
bring the blanket into her room, then “request”
performances from her dolls and stuffed animals. “Camel Happy
Feet!” she’ll pronounce, and then bring out her stuffed
camel and put him through his paces. “Baby Doll Happy
Feet!” “Elephant Happy Feet!” You get the idea.
My kid is really giving her mengerie quite the cardio workout.

Happy Feet is a great way to kill a few minutes, but be careful you
don’t bring it up unless you’ve got a bit of energy
yourself. Take it from me; doing Happy Feet while 5 months pregnant
is not as fun as it sounds. After a few seconds of it, I’ll
craftily exclaim, “Maddie’s turn! Go feet! Faster!
Faster! I don’t think you can go any faster!” Thus
challenged, of course, Maddie will determinedly keep going until
she’s completely breathless.

digital camera for Christmas? It’s teeny tiny and
takes really decent video as well.
