Delicious Pampering
I went recently to the opening of the newest Giggle store in Manhattan. Mommies from all over the city were gathered to shop and chat and enjoy some like-minded (read: sleep-deprived) companionship. I wanted to check out the bi-coastal store’s newest presence as I update my Top 5s Page, but I also looked forward to a chance to mingle with fellow mommies on roughly the same journey as me, sympathize with them, and let’s face it, pick their brains for more great recommendations to pass on to you guys. I’ll confess I was eavesdropping on more than one conversation debating the merits of this diaper bag or that stroller.
(On a side note, when I returned from the party, a friend of mine commented that I’m like the Carrie Bradshaw of the New York baby world. My husband smirked and said, “I guess that makes me Mr. Big.” There’ll be no living with him now . . .)
More on the store itself in an upcoming entry; I wanted to talk today about the company that organized the event, Divalysscious.
A New York mom looking to provide harried, underpampered mommies with opportunities to gather together, have a good time, and feel just a bit luxurious founded Divalysscious a couple years ago. They first came on my radar over the holidays, when they snagged a private (!!!) shopping time at the Times Square Toys R Us, complete with childcare, special giveaways, and more. Divalysscious seems to have found a great niche in the city; moms looking for kid-friendly but not necessarily kid-centric ways to gather don’t have many options other than the standard Mommy and Me -type things. Many of the events cost money (though the Giggle opening did not), but seem well worth it: for a Valentine’s celebration, for example, Divalysscious is getting prime real estate in the awesome Dylan’s Candy Bar for two hours, replete with a great live band, candy decorating, pizza and drinks, for $75 per family. In Manhattan, that’s a bargain.
Lyssa Stern, the founder of Divalysscious, was telling me at the party that the organization’s become so well known, companies are approaching her about hosting a Divalysscious event. In a city that makes it as difficult as possible to raise a baby and not curse in its presence at least once a day ($%@* cab driver! My $@#% stroller won’t fit down the grocery store aisles! Please hold the $#@% doors on the subway!), it’s nice to see companies acknowledging, even wooing mommies en masse. I think this organization provides a great outlet for a lot of moms, and was wishing out loud that it were available in other cities.
How cool is this? She told me she’s heard from people across the country that have been inspired by her and are starting their own thing. Mommies can feel so powerless: we’re often doing all we can just to keep our heads above water, and feel pretty invisible in the business world. Having an outlet like this goes beyond meeting up with your girlfriends for another circuit at the mall; it makes you feel important, special, and yes, even a bit pampered. Mommies unite!
Even if it is just to get a group discount at a day spa.
