Wagons, Ho!

Our living room looks as if a Target exploded.

On the piano, baby clothes.  On the kitchen pass-thru, men’s wear.  Piano bench, women’s wear.

And on the dining room table (seats eight,) baby gear.

We’re getting ready for Madeleine’s first trip to Dallas to visit her many relatives, and I feel like the supply chief for a wagon train, organizing our necessities (bouncy seat!  Check!  Playmat!  Check!  Piggy!  Piggy?  Where’s Piggy!!!  Whew, Check!) for a one-week trip the way pioneers planned for an eight-month haul across the unsettled territories.

Adding this 13-pound 5-month-old to our family has added a huge suitcase, a carry-on, a car seat, and a stroller to our travel gear.  How can you narrow down the wardrobe selection when 1) half of what she owns has been given to her by aforementioned relatives and you’re dying for them to see her in the little dress they picked out; and 2) she looks so cute in everything??  So, since her clothes are so tiny, I pack everything.

Then you turn to the gear.  I’m bringing a 68-count bag of diapers with me.  I’m reasonably certain they sell diapers in Dallas (which my husband thoughtfully pointed out,) but Madeleine’s on the cusp of going up a diaper size and we need to use up what we’ve got.  My thoughts turn towards her toys; what items are soothing to her?  How much familiarity will she need in a scary new situation?  How much is first-time-parent overkill?  Ok, the monitors we need - naps and such.  The MP3 player and speakers we need – bedtime routine, with her custom-made lullabye playlist, must be followed as closely as possible.  Bouncy seat should come – where else will she sit while I eat Thanksgiving dinner?  Her playmat’s a must – it’s where she goes to zone out when her surroundings are too much.  Maybe I can cut –

Sigh.  Just throw it all in.
