Pre-Egg-Hunt Jitters
Cora’s got her pre-kindergarten
Easter party today, and I have to confess I’m nervous on a
few different levels.
One, today’s party signals the opening of the refined sugar
floodgates for the extended Easter holiday. Cora’s been
bringing home jelly beans all week, and tomorrow’s just going
to ratchet up the junk food quotient exponentially. And how do you
tell your child you’re going to throw away 70% of whatever
she gets?
In secret, of course.
Two, I am having a little performance
anxiety about Cora’s Easter basket. We’ve got a very
nice basket we bought for her at Target a few years ago, and she
quite likes it – wooden, with nice paint, the whole thing.
But I recall two years ago at Maddie’s egg hunt seeing a
plethora of monogrammed lush Pottery Barn Kids baskets. Will
Cora’s basket signify she comes from the wrong side of the
tracks?
Finally, Cora’s class has some, um, energetic parents. This
year’s parties have been big, and I’ve written about
how over-the-top some folks have gotten – the Mayflower made
out of popsicle sticks for Thanksgiving in a THREE-YEAR-OLD’s
class comes to mind. And I remember from Maddie’s time at the
school that it’s pretty hard to hold four-year-olds back
during an egg hunt in general. I feel a lot of side-coaching and
perhaps even hip-checking from parents coming on.
But I’m not too worried: I can give as good as I get. And if
I spy an egg with an all-natural lollipop made from agave nectar, I
will cut you if you get in my kid’s way.
