Les Cygnets
Maddie’s school is having a talent
show today, and any child who wishes to can perform.
Need I mention who is performing?
Actually, Maddie’s participation
wasn’t a foregone conclusion; she’s turning out to be
consistently introverted, her love of the stage notwithstanding,
and so I wasn’t certain she’d wish to do something in
front of her entire grade level. But when her friend Elise asked if
Maddie would do a dance from “Swan Lake” with her,
Maddie readily agreed.
So we’ve had our rehearsals – two girls capering madly
around the living room. The choreography is set – and looks
eerily like their upcoming recital choreography (hey, one less
thing for them to have to memorize!). And the costumes have been
selected and tested. White romantic tutus, with white bike shorts
modestly underneath, and a jaunty white feather in their hair.
The bag is packed, the music cd burned, and the time emblazoned on
the family calendar. All that remains now is for me to show up
– camcorder in hand, of course.
Will they do it, or back down? Will they remember the choreography
or simply flit about the stage improvising? Will I be given
“Stage Mother of the Year” award as I frantically coach
from the back of the gym?
Tune in tomorrow to find out.
